How fat freezing works

Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin, muscle and nerves around them. A fat freezing applicator draws the pocket of fat in and cools it to around minus nine degrees for a set time while the skin is protected. The cold makes the fat cells die off through a natural process called apoptosis, and over the following weeks your body clears them through the lymphatic system. The surrounding tissue is unharmed. The reduction is in the region of 20% to 40% of the fat in the treated area per treatment, and because the cells are removed rather than shrunk, they do not grow back.

Our 360 applicators cool the pocket from all sides rather than from one face of it, which is where the 360 comes from and why we see better results than standard single-sided fat freezing. We have 360 applicators shaped for the upper and lower abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, arms and the area under the chin.

Areas we treat

The best candidates are pinchable pockets on someone whose weight is fairly stable, and if the area is not suitable for freezing we will say so at the assessment and talk through Emerald Laser or Exilis instead.

Fat freezing prices in Newcastle

We price per area and per session, so the number you see is the number you pay. One area is £350 for a single session or £899 for a course of three. Two areas £450, or £1,199 for three sessions. Three areas £550, or £1,399. Four areas £650, or £1,699. Six areas £850, or £2,099. Eight areas £1,050, or £2,699. Most people need one to three sessions on an area, and your practitioner tells you which at the assessment, with the full price before anything is booked. 0% finance over 12 months is available on plans of £1,000 or more, subject to a credit assessment, and if you have a like-for-like quote from another medical clinic within 50 miles, bring it and we will match it.

What happens at your appointment

Your assessment is free. Your practitioner measures the area, checks the skin and how the fat sits, and sets out the number of areas and sessions you need. The treatment itself takes one to two hours depending on how many areas you are having. The first few minutes of each applicator feel very cold, then the area goes numb and most people read or scroll their phone until it is done. There is no anaesthetic, nothing is injected and you drive home and carry on with your day. We book you back in at six weeks for a follow-up and at twelve weeks for a final measurement and photograph, so you can see the change rather than take our word for it.

Results and how long they last

Most people notice the area looking smaller from about four weeks, with the full result between six and twelve weeks as the body finishes clearing the cells. The cells that are gone stay gone. The cells that remain can still enlarge if your weight goes up, so the result lasts as long as your weight stays roughly where it is, and plenty of people come back for a second area rather than a repeat of the first. Side effects and safety

Fat freezing is non-invasive and CE-marked, and the usual side effects are redness, tenderness, mild swelling and a numb patch that fades over days to weeks, occasionally a couple of months. Some people bruise where the applicator sat. There is a rare risk, with any cryolipolysis device, of the treated fat becoming firmer rather than smaller, and we go through that with you before you book. It is not suitable during pregnancy, and after a baby we ask you to wait a minimum of six months, or twelve months after a C-section. If you have a cold-related condition such as cryoglobulinaemia or cold urticaria, tell us at the assessment, because freezing is not the right treatment for you.
