Ultrasonic cavitation in Newcastle: what it does, what it costs and what we use instead
Ultrasonic cavitation is the fat treatment most people find first, because it is cheap, it is in most salons, and the adverts say "non-surgical liposuction". We get asked about it every week. We do not run it as a stand-alone treatment, and this page explains why, what it actually does to fat, what the ultrasound inside our Exilis Ultra treatment does differently, and what each option costs at our clinic in Whickham, Newcastle.
What ultrasonic cavitation is
A cavitation machine sends low-frequency ultrasound, usually around 40 kHz, into the fat layer under the skin. The sound waves create tiny bubbles in the fluid between the fat cells, the bubbles collapse, and the pressure is meant to break open some of the cells so their contents leak out and are carried away by the lymphatic system. Sessions take thirty to forty minutes, feel like a warm handpiece with an occasional high-pitched ringing in your ears, and are sold in courses of six to twelve. It is painless and there is no downtime, which is why it is everywhere.
Why we do not run it on its own
Three reasons. The results are small and unreliable: the small studies that exist show a centimetre or two off the waist after a full course, and plenty of people get nothing, because a salon-strength device cannot deliver enough energy to the fat to change it much. The fat it does release has to go somewhere, so the treatment only works if you eat clean, drink a lot of water and exercise afterwards, which is also the point at which most people would lose the inch anyway. Third, it does nothing for the skin, so the area it treats can look looser rather than smaller. We have better tools in the clinic, so we do not offer cavitation as a treatment in its own right.
Where ultrasound does earn its place: Exilis Ultra
Exilis Ultra Body is a BTL device that puts monopolar radiofrequency and ultrasound through the same handpiece. The radiofrequency heats the fat layer and the skin above it to around 40 degrees, and the ultrasound spreads that heat through the fat evenly so the applicator can reach the right temperature without hot spots. At that temperature the fat cells are disrupted and cleared over the following weeks, and the collagen in the skin contracts and rebuilds, so the same session reduces a soft pocket of fat and tightens the skin over it. If you have been searching for cavitation, this is the closest thing we run, with the skin tightening that cavitation cannot do. A course of four sessions is £785 for one area and £1,285 for two, each session feels like a hot stone massage, and it treats the stomach, love handles, back, arms, thighs and knees.
For a defined pocket of fat, freezing does more
If the problem is a pinchable pocket on a stomach, flank, back, arm or thigh, fat freezing removes more fat per session than any ultrasound treatment. A 360 applicator cools the pocket until the fat cells die off, and the body clears them over six to twelve weeks, with a reduction in the region of 20% to 40% of the fat in the treated area per session. The cells that go do not come back. One area is £350 for a single session and £450 for two, with courses of three at £899 and £1,199. For fat across a wide area or a higher BMI, Emerald Laser empties the cells over a course of ten sessions at £2,500 and includes a Body Ballancer lymphatic drainage session every time, which does the clearing job that cavitation relies on you doing yourself.
Cavitation, Exilis or fat freezing: which one
A pinchable pocket on firm skin: fat freezing. A pocket with loose or crepey skin over it: Exilis, or fat freezing first and Exilis to tighten what is left. Softness all the way round the middle: Emerald Laser. Someone who has already paid for a course of cavitation and seen nothing: usually fat freezing, because the pocket is still there and freezing acts on it directly. The free assessment is where we pinch, measure and tell you which, and if the honest answer is that a treatment will not do enough, we say so rather than sell you a course.
What a session is like
Exilis: you lie down, gel goes on, and the applicator moves over the area in slow passes for thirty to ninety minutes depending on how many areas you are treating. It feels warm, then hot, then warm again as the built-in cooling kicks in. No anaesthetic, no downtime, and you drive home. Fat freezing: the applicator draws the pocket in and cools it for about an hour; it feels cold for a few minutes and then numb, and you can read or scroll until it is done. Both start with a free assessment where we measure and photograph the area and set out the full price before anything is booked.
Safety
Exilis Ultra and fat freezing are non-invasive, CE-marked treatments with no needles and nothing injected. Side effects are temporary: redness, tenderness and mild swelling, and after fat freezing a numb patch that can take around two months to fade, plus a rare risk of the treated fat becoming firmer rather than smaller, which we explain before you book. Neither is carried out during pregnancy.
