Bio Spicule Microneedling
Bio spicule microneedling resurfaces the skin with no needles and no break in the skin. Millions of microscopic natural spicules, taken from freshwater sponges, are massaged into the skin by hand, where they open tiny channels in the upper dermis and push the skin into a fast renewal cycle. At RT Aesthetics in Whickham, Newcastle, we pair the spicules with exosomes for a stronger repair response. A single treatment with exosomes is £400 and a course of four is £999. What bio spicule microneedling does
The spicules are tiny rods of natural silica. Under a microscope they look like sharp crystals; to the eye they are a fine powder. Worked into the skin over about five minutes, they stay in the upper layers for a few days and keep stimulating the tissue around them, which is why the skin feels prickly for a couple of days after treatment. The skin responds by shedding its tired outer layer and building fresh cells underneath, with more collagen and better circulation, and the normal renewal cycle of around 28 days is pushed to roughly a week. There is no bleeding and no anaesthetic is needed.
What exosomes add
Exosomes are a concentrated serum of cell signalling particles applied straight after the spicules, while the channels they have made are still open. They carry the growth factors and messengers skin cells use to coordinate repair, so the renewal the spicules have started happens with more support and the skin settles faster. It works on the surface and the upper dermis, so it is a texture and tone treatment. For sagging or jowls, look at HIFU. For lost volume, dermal fillers. For skin that has become thin and crepey rather than rough, polynucleotides often do more, and the two can be combined.
What happens on the day
Your skin is cleansed and lightly exfoliated, then the spicules are massaged in by hand, section by section, until the whole area has been treated. It feels like fine grit being rubbed into the skin, uncomfortable rather than painful, and no anaesthetic is needed. The exosomes go on next, followed by a calming serum and SPF. The appointment takes about 45 minutes and you can drive home and go back to work afterwards.
Downtime and results
Skin is red straight afterwards and feels warm and prickly to the touch for about two days. Flaking or peeling starts around day three or four and has cleared within seven to ten days, leaving skin that is brighter and smoother. How much you peel depends on your skin and on how firmly the spicules were worked in, which we adjust at each visit. We recommend a course of four treatments, with the spacing set at your consultation, because the improvement in pigmentation and texture builds from one session to the next.

Preparing for treatment
Stop retinol and other strong actives a few days before, avoid sunbeds and unprotected sun for two weeks before, and arrive with clean skin and no make-up. Tell us about any medication, recent skin treatments or cold sores, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because we may need to adjust or postpone the treatment.
Aftercare
No make-up for 24 hours. SPF every day, because freshly resurfaced skin burns easily and pigmentation comes straight back if it does. Keep skincare to a gentle cleanser and moisturiser until the flaking has finished, and avoid exfoliants, retinol, facial waxing, sunbeds, saunas and swimming for a week. Do not pick or rub the flaking skin; the spicules are still working in it and pulling it off early can leave marks. We go through aftercare with you on the day and you can call the clinic with any questions.
