Does Fat Freezing Work On The Stomach?

Yes, fat freezing works on the stomach, and the stomach is the single most treated area we see. A course of treatment typically reduces the fat in the treated pocket by around 20 to 40 per cent over six to twelve weeks. What it will not do is change the number on your scales, flatten a stomach that is mostly loose skin, or make up for a diet that is not working. Below is an honest account of what it does, how long it takes and when we tell people not to bother.

Does fat freezing actually work on the stomach?

It does, for the right problem. Cryolipolysis cools fat cells to the point where they cannot survive, at a temperature that leaves skin, nerves and muscle unharmed. The damaged cells are then cleared by the body over the following weeks, which is why nothing happens overnight.

The stomach responds well because the fat there tends to sit in a pocket the applicator can draw in and hold. Where people are disappointed is when the problem was never really fat: a stomach that has lost tone after pregnancy or significant weight loss is a skin laxity problem, and freezing fat will not tighten skin. How fat freezing works on the stomach

A gel pad goes on first to protect the skin. The applicator is then placed on the stomach and uses suction to draw the fat into the cup. The cooling plates bring the tissue down to around minus seven degrees and hold it there, which crystallises the fat cells and starts apoptosis, the body’s normal process for clearing dead cells.

There is no anaesthetic and no needles. The first few minutes feel like an intense cold and a firm pull, then the area goes numb and most people read, work or sleep through the rest of it. You are usually out of the clinic within the hour and straight back to normal activity, including the gym.

What results to expect on the stomach, and when

How many sessions will I need?

Most stomachs need two to four sessions, spaced at least six to eight weeks apart so we can see what the previous one actually achieved before adding another. Some people are happy after one. Anyone promising a flat stomach from a single cycle is guessing.

How many you need depends on how much fat is there, how it sits, and what you want. We would rather book you one session, photograph the result at twelve weeks and then decide together, than take payment for a package you may not need.

When fat freezing on the stomach is not the answer

• You want to lose weight. This is not a weight loss treatment. It reduces a pocket of fat, not your body weight. If weight loss is the goal, the treatment will disappoint you.
• The problem is loose skin. Skin that has stretched needs tightening, not fat reduction. HIFU body treatment is usually the better conversation.
• The fat is visceral. Fat sitting behind the abdominal wall, around the organs, cannot be pinched and cannot be treated. Only subcutaneous fat responds.
• You have a cold-related condition. Cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease and paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria all rule the treatment out. Tell us about any condition that makes you sensitive to cold.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding. We will ask you to wait.

Side effects and safety

Cryolipolysis is FDA cleared and has been in clinical use since 2010, following the study that supported its original approval (FDA clearance record). The usual after-effects on the stomach are redness, swelling, tenderness, temporary numbness and occasionally a tingling or itching sensation as sensation returns. These settle over one to two weeks.

The complication people ask about is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the treated area enlarges instead of shrinking. It is rare, it is more commonly reported in men, and it does not resolve on its own. We raise it at consultation rather than waiting to be asked, because you should know about it before you decide.

If fat freezing is not right, what else is there?

Is fat freezing on the stomach painful?

No. The first few minutes are an intense cold and a strong pulling sensation, then the area numbs. Most people find the massage afterwards more uncomfortable than the treatment itself.

Will the fat come back?

The cells that are destroyed do not return. The fat cells you still have can grow, so if you gain weight afterwards the result will fade. The treatment does not protect you from that.

How soon can I go back to the gym?

The same day. There is no downtime and no restriction on exercise.

Can I treat my stomach and flanks at the same time?

Yes, and most people do. Treating the stomach alone can leave the love handles looking more prominent by comparison, so we usually plan the two together.
