Polynucleotides or skin boosters?

The two are often lumped together and they do different things. Polynucleotides are a repair treatment: they work on the skin’s own cells to rebuild it. Skin boosters are hyaluronic acid treatments: they hydrate and plump. Newest sits between the two, because it combines polynucleotides with hyaluronic acid, so you get the repair signal and the hydration in one product. Which one your skin needs depends on whether the problem is dryness and dullness or thinning and damage, and that is what we decide at the consultation.

What polynucleotides do

Polynucleotides are highly purified fragments of DNA, usually from salmon, injected in a series of small deposits across the treatment area. Once in the skin they signal the fibroblast cells to repair: to produce new collagen and elastin, and to calm inflammation. Nothing is being filled and nothing is being relaxed. The skin is being prompted to rebuild itself, which is why the result develops over weeks rather than days, and why it keeps improving after the course has finished.

Under the eyes

The eye area is where polynucleotides have the most to offer. The skin here is the thinnest on the face, so it is the first to look crepey, hollow or dark, and it is the area where filler is riskiest and least forgiving. Vitaran Eyes treats the skin itself: it thickens and firms it, softens fine lines and often improves the dark, tired look that comes from thin skin showing the tissue beneath.

Face

Crepey cheeks, a drawn lower face, sun damage, acne scarring and skin that has lost its bounce after weight loss or the menopause all respond to Vitaran Face or Newest. If dryness and dullness are the main problem, Newest adds hydration; if the skin is thin and damaged, the pure polynucleotide is the one.

Neck and chest

Neck lines and crepey skin on the chest are hard to treat with anything else, because there is no volume to replace and the skin is too thin for most energy treatments. Polynucleotides work on the skin quality directly, and a course here pairs well with HIFU if there is loose skin as well.

We look at your skin, talk through what bothers you, check your medical history, and tell you plainly whether polynucleotides will get you there or whether something else would do a better job. If we go ahead, you get an exact plan: which product and how many sessions, with the price of the whole course. There is no pressure to book on the day.

What happens on the day

The skin is cleansed and the product is placed as a series of small injections across the area, which takes about thirty minutes. You will feel a scratch and a little pressure with each one. Small raised bumps at the injection points are normal and settle within a few hours, occasionally up to 48 hours around the eyes. There is no real downtime: you can drive home and go back to work.

Results and how long they last

Improvement is gradual. Skin often looks fresher and better hydrated within a fortnight of the first session, and the real change in texture and firmness, and under the eyes, builds over the course, with the full result at around six weeks after the final session. Because the skin has been rebuilt rather than filled, the result lasts well, and a top-up session every six to twelve months is usually enough to keep it.

Side effects and safety

Expect small bumps and mild swelling for a day or two, and possibly a bruise, especially under the eyes. Serious reactions are very rare, and polynucleotides are well tolerated because the product is highly purified. Tell us at the consultation if you have a fish allergy, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have any skin infection, because those decide whether and how we treat. Aftercare

Leave make-up off for the rest of the day, keep the area clean and do not press or massage it. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and sunbeds for 24 hours, and wear SPF daily.
