How anti-wrinkle injections work

Expression lines are made by muscles. Every time you frown or raise your eyebrows the skin folds in the same place, and over the years the fold becomes a line that is there even at rest. Anti-wrinkle injections place a tiny amount of a prescribed muscle-relaxing medicine into the muscle that makes the fold, which reduces its activity for a few months. The skin above stops being creased and the line softens, or disappears if it is still a dynamic line. Movement is reduced, not removed: treated properly, you can still frown and look surprised, you just do not crease as deeply.

The three classic areas, and the treatment most people mean when they book. They are usually treated together because they work as a unit: relaxing the frown muscles alone can leave the forehead looking busier by comparison, and vice versa. Under-eye lines

Fine lines directly under the eye that show when you smile. A small, careful dose softens them; too much would change the shape of your smile, which is why the dose for this area is decided by the prescriber at your assessment.

Brow lift

Relaxing the muscles that pull the brows down lets the tail of the brow lift by a few millimetres. It opens the eyes and suits people with a low or heavy brow who are not ready for anything surgical. Some people search for it as an eyebrow lift; it is the same treatment, priced in the list above, and whether it will work for you is decided at the consultation, because a heavy brow sometimes needs the forehead treated at the same time.

Bunny lines

The diagonal lines across the bridge of the nose that appear when you scrunch it. They often become more noticeable once the frown lines have been treated, so they are a common add-on.

Lip flip and smoker’s lines

A lip flip relaxes the edge of the muscle around the mouth so the top lip rolls slightly outwards, giving a fuller look without any filler. It is subtle and lasts a shorter time than most areas. Smoker’s lines are the vertical lines above the top lip, and a light dose softens them; if the lines are deep, a small amount of filler is sometimes the better answer.

Gummy smile, sad smile and pebble chin

A gummy smile shows a lot of gum when you smile, and relaxing the muscle that lifts the top lip reduces it. A sad smile is mouth corners that turn down at rest, and relaxing the muscle that pulls them down lets them level out. A pebble chin is the dimpled, orange-peel texture some chins get when the muscle is tense, and it smooths out well.

Nose lift

Some noses dip at the tip when you smile. Relaxing the small muscle responsible lifts the tip a little and stops the dip. It is a small change, but for the people it suits it is a satisfying one.

Jawline slimming

A wide or square lower face is often down to a strong masseter, the chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. Relaxing it lets the muscle slim over a few weeks, which narrows the lower face and softens the jaw angle. It takes a higher dose than a facial area, which is why it is priced separately.

Excessive underarm sweating

Injections into the skin of the underarm block the signal to the sweat glands there, and sweating reduces for months. It suits people whose sweating is not controlled by antiperspirants and is assessed separately at the consultation.

What happens at your consultation

Anti-wrinkle products are prescription-only medicines. What happens on the day

The treatment itself takes about thirty minutes, most of it planning and marking. The injections use a very fine needle and feel like a series of small pinpricks; no anaesthetic is needed. You can drive and go back to work straight away, with a few small bumps at the injection points that settle within the hour.

Results and how long they last

You will notice the muscles softening within a few days, and the full result is there at around two weeks. Results typically last around three months, sometimes longer with regular treatment, and then movement gradually returns and the lines with it. Treatment is repeated when the result has worn off, never before, and each repeat needs a reassessment and a new prescription.

Side effects and safety

Stay upright for four hours, do not rub or massage the treated area, and leave off make-up until the next day. Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and sunbeds for 24 hours. Gentle facial expressions are fine and there is nothing else you need to do; the result develops on its own over the next two weeks.
