Fat Freezing Results: What to Expect, When, and How Much Fat Goes

Fat freezing results do not arrive on the day. That is the first thing to understand, and it is the reason some people decide it has not worked when the real change is still three weeks away. This page sets out what a result from fat freezing looks like, when it shows, how much fat goes, what decides whether yours is at the top or the bottom of that range, and what we see at our clinic in Whickham, Newcastle, where we photograph and measure every client before and after.
The short version
- Each session removes 20% to 40% of the fat cells in the treated pocket, for good. A course of three on one area usually ends up around half the original fat gone.
- Nothing shows in week one. The first change is at about three weeks, most of the result by eight, and the full result at twelve, which is when we photograph.
- The fat must be pinchable and your weight needs to stay steady. Loose skin and firm, deep stomach fat are not fat freezing jobs.

How much fat does fat freezing remove?
A single session removes somewhere between 20% and 40% of the fat cells in the treated pocket. Those cells are gone for good, because once a fat cell has been frozen and cleared by the body it does not grow back. The range is wide because people are different: how soft the fat is, how well the applicator could grip it, how active your lymphatic system is and how steady your weight stays all move the number. On a stomach or a pair of love handles that shows up as a flatter line in clothes and a drop of an inch or two on the tape measure. It does not show up as a different number on the bathroom scales, because fat is light and the treated pocket is small.
When do fat freezing results show?
Nothing visible happens in the first week. The area is firm, a little swollen and sometimes numb, and it can look slightly bigger than before, which worries people who do not expect it. From around three weeks the swelling has gone and the first change is there, usually noticed in how a waistband sits rather than in the mirror. Between six and eight weeks most of the result has arrived. At twelve weeks the body has cleared the last of the treated cells and that is the point we take the after photograph, because it is the honest one.
One session or a course?
Some people are happy after one session. If the pocket was small and soft, one treatment can be enough. Most people with a stubborn area choose a second or third session, spaced six to eight weeks apart, because each one takes another 20% to 40% off what is left, and the result compounds. A course of three on the same area typically ends up somewhere around half the original fat gone, which is the sort of change people notice. We will tell you at the assessment whether we think one session will do it or whether you should plan for a course, and the price reflects that: £350 for a single session or £899 for three.
What decides a good result
The fat has to be pinchable. That is the rule that decides almost everything. Fat freezing works by drawing tissue into an applicator and cooling it, so a soft pocket you can take hold of responds well and a firm, flat layer does not. Your weight needs to stay roughly where it is, because the fat cells that remain can still grow if you gain weight, and that can hide a perfectly good result. Drinking water, walking and keeping the area moving in the weeks afterwards help the body clear the treated cells. A firm massage of the area straight after treatment has been shown to improve the result as well.
Fat freezing before and after: what we see in the clinic
The results we see most often are on the stomach and flanks, where a course of two or three sessions gives a visibly flatter profile and a waistband that fits again. The inner thighs respond well because the fat there is soft and the applicator grips it easily. Upper arms, the back and bra line, under the chin and the pubic area are all regular results for us. The results that disappoint are the ones where fat freezing was the wrong tool: loose skin after weight loss or pregnancy, which needs tightening rather than fat removal, and a hard, rounded stomach where the fat sits behind the abdominal wall and no applicator can reach it. We will say so at the assessment rather than treat you and hope.

Do fat freezing results last?
The fat cells that are removed do not come back. What can change is the size of the cells that are left, so the result lasts as long as your weight holds. People who treat an area and then keep their weight steady are still seeing the result years later. People who gain a stone will see the area fill out again, as any area would. Fat freezing is a shape treatment for a pocket that will not shift, not a weight loss treatment, and we will not sell it as one.
Questions people ask
Why does the area look bigger after fat freezing?
Swelling. The tissue has been pulled into an applicator and frozen, and it reacts the way any tissue does. It settles within a week or two and the real result follows.
Can I speed up fat freezing results?
A little. Water, walking and the post-treatment massage help your body clear the treated cells. Nothing makes it happen in days, because the clearing is done by your lymphatic system at its own pace.
What if I see no result at all?
It happens, usually because the applicator could not get a good grip on the fat or because the area was not fat in the first place. That is why we assess before we book, and why we photograph and measure, so if the result is not there at twelve weeks we can see it and tell you plainly what to do next.
Is one session worth it?
For a small, soft pocket, yes. For a larger area, a course gives a result you can see without squinting, and we price a course of three at £899 for that reason.
