How Emerald Laser works

Emerald is a low-level, non-thermal laser made by Erchonia. Ten 532 nm green lasers shine onto the area for the length of the session. Unlike freezing or heat-based treatments, the light does not kill the fat cells: it makes them open temporarily and release their fatty contents into the space between the cells, where the lymphatic system collects them and the body processes them the way it does dietary fat. The cells are left smaller and the area measures smaller. Because nothing is heated, frozen or destroyed, there is no pain, no bruising, no numbness and no recovery, and because the cells are still there, the treatment works on larger areas and higher BMIs that other devices cannot treat.

Does Emerald Laser work?

The clearance evidence is the strongest of any device we run. Emerald’s FDA clearances rest on multi-centre, double-blind, randomised controlled trials, and one of those studies showed an average of six inches of circumference lost across the waist, hips and thighs over a course of ten treatments, twice a week for five weeks. That is an average on people who completed the course and kept their weight steady, and results vary with how consistently you attend and how much you move. It is not a weight loss treatment. It reshapes the area, and it works best alongside the normal habits that keep your weight where it is.

What a session is like

You lie on the couch, the laser arms are positioned over the area and switched on, and you feel nothing at all: no heat, no cold, no pressure. Sessions are around thirty minutes and you can read, scroll or doze. Afterwards you go into the Body Ballancer suit, a compression garment that works up the body in gentle waves to move the released fat through the lymphatic system, which is the part most people look forward to. Then you drive home. A course is ten or fifteen sessions, usually two or three a week, so a ten-session course takes four to five weeks. Drinking plenty of water and moving each day helps the body clear what the laser releases.

Results and how long they last

Most people see the area change within the first few sessions and the full result at the end of the course, with measurements taken along the way so you can see it in numbers rather than guess. Because the fat cells are emptied rather than removed, the result lasts as long as your weight stays roughly where it is, and a maintenance plan is there for people who want to keep it topped up. Emerald also has a mild collagen effect in the treated skin, which is why some people notice cellulite softening as the course goes on.

Who it suits

Anyone with a wider area of fat rather than one pinchable pocket. Anyone with a BMI above the range fat freezing is cleared for, up to 40. Anyone who cannot have or does not want freezing: the cold, the numb patch afterwards, the bruising. Anyone who wants an easy course with nothing to recover from. It suits a defined single pocket less well than fat freezing, which removes more from one spot in one session, and loose skin needs Exilis alongside it.
