EMSculpt Neo Benefits: What It Does for Muscle, Fat and Core Strength, and What It Does Not
Contents
EMSculpt Neo is the only non-surgical treatment that builds muscle, and that single fact explains most of its benefits. Everything else on the market reduces fat or tightens skin. This one changes the muscle underneath as well, which is why a soft stomach or a flat bottom responds to it when nothing else has worked. This page sets out what it does, in plain terms, and is just as clear about what it does not do, based on BTL's clinical studies and what we see at our clinic in Whickham, Newcastle.
The short version
- It builds muscle and reduces fat in the same 30 minute session, with around 25% more muscle and 30% less fat at three months in BTL's studies.
- It helps the separated stomach muscles after pregnancy, lifts the bum without filler or surgery, and strengthens a core that training has not reached.
- It will not take weight off, tighten loose skin or replace exercise. A course of four is £2,000 for one area, with a free assessment first.
What EMSculpt Neo is
EMSculpt Neo is a device made by BTL. Its applicator sits on the area and delivers two energies at the same time. Focused electromagnetic energy makes the muscle contract fully, around 20,000 times in a 30 minute session, which is far beyond what you could do yourself and is what builds the muscle. Radiofrequency warms the fat layer over the muscle to the point where fat cells break down and are cleared over the following weeks. A course is four sessions, five to ten days apart. There is nothing to recover from. Our EMSculpt Neo in Newcastle page covers the treatment in full.
The benefits
1. It builds muscle, which nothing else non-surgical does
Fat freezing, lasers, ultrasound and radiofrequency all work on fat or skin. None of them touches the muscle. EMSculpt Neo does, and the muscle it builds is real: BTL measured it with ultrasound and MRI, and the average across their studies was a 25% increase in muscle thickness three months after a course. For a stomach that is soft rather than fat, or a bottom that has lost its shape, that is the change you were after.
2. It reduces fat in the same session
The original EMSculpt built muscle only. The Neo added radiofrequency, so the fat over the muscle is treated at the same time, and the average fat reduction in the studies was 30%. That matters because muscle you cannot see under a layer of fat is not much of a result. The two together are what give the area definition.
3. It strengthens the core
The contractions reach the deep abdominal muscles that are hard to work with ordinary exercise. People notice it as a stronger middle: sitting up more easily, less lower back ache from a weak core, a better feel in the gym. Some people have it for the strength rather than for how the area looks.
4. It helps the separated muscles after pregnancy
Diastasis recti, the gap down the middle of the stomach that pregnancy can leave, is one of the things EMSculpt Neo is studied for. The contractions bring the muscles back towards the middle and build them, and BTL's studies recorded a reduction in the separation after a course. It will not close a large gap on its own, and we wait until you have been signed off to exercise, but for the mummy tummy that will not flatten however many sit ups you do, it is often the first thing that works.
5. It lifts the bum without filler or surgery
On the buttocks the aim is muscle rather than fat loss, and the muscle work does the lifting. The result is a rounder, higher shape made of your own muscle, which is the main reason people choose it over a surgical BBL or injected filler. Our non-surgical bum lift page sets out what it can and cannot change there.
6. It works when training the area is not an option
A back or knee injury, a long gap from the gym, a schedule that does not leave time, or simply an area that does not respond however hard you train it. The muscle does not know whether the contraction came from a squat or an applicator, and the adaptation is the same.
7. There is no downtime
A session is 30 minutes, you walk out and carry on with your day, and the only after effect is the soreness you would get from a hard workout for a day or two. Our EMSculpt Neo side effects page covers what is normal and who should not have it.
8. The result keeps building after the course
The muscle change shows at four to six weeks and the fat clears over eight to twelve, so the area keeps improving for three months after the last session. Our results timeline goes through it week by week.
What EMSculpt Neo does not do
It does not take weight off. It changes the shape and firmness of one area, and the scales will barely move. It does not tighten loose skin, so if the problem is skin that has lost its snap, Exilis is the treatment and EMSculpt can come after it. It does not work well through a thick layer of fat, because the contractions cannot reach the muscle properly; we treat the fat first with fat freezing or Emerald Laser and bring EMSculpt in afterwards. It does not replace exercise. It gets a muscle to where months of training would, and staying active is what keeps it there.
Is it the same as EMS?
No, and the difference is worth understanding before you book anywhere. EMS is a general term for electrical muscle stimulation, and a lot of what is advertised as EMS sculpting at £40 a session is a lookalike machine with none of the output, the radiofrequency or the evidence behind the BTL device. The benefits on this page come from studies on EMSculpt Neo and do not transfer to a different machine because it looks similar. Our EMS vs EMSculpt Neo page explains how to check what a clinic is running.
What it costs
A course of four on one area is £2,000 at our clinic, £3,250 for two areas and £4,450 for three, with a free assessment first and 0% finance over 12 months on plans of £1,000 or more. Our EMSculpt Neo cost guide compares that with the rest of the UK and explains why cheap sessions are a different machine.
Common questions
Is EMSculpt Neo better than the gym?
It is faster, and it reaches muscle the gym often does not. It is not a replacement. The best results we see are in people who train and use EMSculpt for the area that training has not changed.
What are the benefits of EMSculpt Neo for the stomach?
A flatter, firmer middle, a narrower gap if the muscles separated in pregnancy, and a stronger core. The fat over the muscle reduces at the same time.
Does EMSculpt Neo help with back pain?
A stronger core takes load off the lower back, and some people notice that. It is not a treatment for back pain and we would not sell it as one.
Who gets the most benefit?
Someone at a stable weight with a pinchable rather than thick layer of fat over the muscle, and a specific area in mind. We check all of that at the free assessment.
