Non-Surgical Neck Lift in Newcastle: Turkey Neck and Loose Neck Treatment

The neck is usually the first thing people notice about themselves and the last thing they do anything about. Faces get attention. Necks get a scarf.

This page covers what we can do about it at our clinic in Whickham, Newcastle, without surgery: what people usually mean by a non-surgical neck lift, which of the four neck problems each treatment suits, and what it all costs.

A loose neck is not one problem

Four different things get called a turkey neck, and they need different treatments.

Loose skin. The skin has lost its collagen and elastin and no longer sits tight against what is underneath. Pinch it and it lifts away easily and takes a moment to settle back. This is the one that responds best to what we do.

Crepiness. Fine horizontal creasing across the front of the neck, the sort that shows up in photographs before you see it in the mirror. Often sun damage on top of thin skin.

Vertical bands. Two cords that stand out from the chin down towards the collarbones, more obvious when you tense your jaw or look down. That is the platysma muscle pulling away. Energy treatments have some effect on the skin over the top, but the bands themselves respond better to muscle relaxing injections.

Fat under the chin. A pad of fat sitting in the submental area, changing the angle between the chin and the neck. That is a fat problem, not a skin problem, and we go through it properly on the page about double chins and jawlines.

Most people have two of the four at once. Working out the mix is the whole point of the first appointment.

Why necks go before faces

The skin on the neck is thinner than the skin on the face and has far fewer oil glands, so it dries out faster and creases more easily. It also gets less protection. Almost nobody puts sunscreen on the front of their neck, and years of looking down at a phone folds the same lines over and over.

Weight change does not help either. Skin that has stretched and come back does not always come back all the way.

What we use

HIFU is the main one. Focused ultrasound is delivered to set depths beneath the surface, heating small points in the deeper layers without damaging the skin on top. The body repairs those points by laying down new collagen, and over the following weeks the tissue contracts. On the neck it works on the skin and the layer underneath it, which is why it does more for a sagging jaw and neck than surface treatments do.

It is not instant. Some tightening shows up in the first fortnight, but the real change builds between eight and twelve weeks after the session as the collagen matures. Most people need one session to start, sometimes two spaced a few months apart if the laxity is significant.

BTL Exilis Ultra is the other one. Radiofrequency and ultrasound together, warming the skin to firm it and improve texture. It is gentler, it suits crepiness better than heavy sagging, and it runs as a course of four to six rather than a one off. What it feels like and what you can do afterwards

HIFU on the neck is warm with sharp pulses in places, particularly over bone. It is uncomfortable rather than painful for most people and the session runs around an hour depending on how much area is covered. You may be a little pink and tender for a day or two, and occasionally slightly swollen.

Exilis is warm and nothing else. Most people find it pleasant.

What it will not do

It will not do what a neck lift does. A surgeon cuts skin away. We tighten what is there. If you have a large amount of hanging skin, we will tell you honestly that you are at the point where surgery gives a better result, and we would rather say that than take your money.

It will not remove deep horizontal necklace lines. Those are creases in the structure of the skin and they soften rather than disappear.

And nothing in a jar is going to do it. Neck creams work on the surface of the skin. The problem is three or four millimetres below that.

Who it suits

Mild to moderate looseness, skin that still has some spring in it, and someone who wants a change without a general anaesthetic. That covers most people in their forties, fifties and sixties who have started noticing their neck in photographs.

It suits less well if you are very lax, if you have significant weight to lose, or if what is bothering you is the bands rather than the skin.

We will also talk through the jaw and jowls at the same appointment, because tightening the neck and leaving the jowls alone rarely looks right. For a lot of people the sensible plan is a non-surgical facelift that covers face, jaw and neck together.

How long it lasts

The collagen you build is real collagen, and it ages at the same rate as the rest of you. Most people see the benefit for somewhere between twelve and eighteen months, then top up. Smokers and heavy sun exposure shorten that.

Non-surgical neck lift options and prices

It depends on which of the four problems you have and whether you are doing the neck on its own or with the lower face. These are the current prices at our Whickham clinic.

• HIFU neck only: £995, usually one session, for loose skin on the neck itself.
• HIFU face and neck: £1,295, when the jawline and jowls have gone with the neck.
• HIFU double chin: £995, for the fat pad under the chin when it comes with loose skin over it.
• Exilis Ultra neck: from £975 for a course of four sessions, for crepiness and finer laxity, or where HIFU is more than the skin needs.
• Polynucleotides: £250 a session, usually two to four sessions, for thin, crepey skin that needs rebuilding rather than lifting. Prescriber-led, after a £25 consultation.
• Muscle relaxing injections for vertical bands: priced after a £25 prescriber consultation.

Consultations for HIFU and Exilis are free. Injectable consultations are £25 and not refundable, because they include the prescriber assessment. Payment plans are available on the larger courses, and if you have a like-for-like quote from another clinic, bring it, because we price match like-for-like clinic treatments.
