Best Jowls Treatment
5 Effective Treatments For Jowls
Jowls is the term used to describe sagging skin below the chin or jawline. Almost everyone develops jowls as they age, as the skin becomes thinner and less elastic over time. Jowls may be less pronounced in people who have thicker skin, more fat, or more collagen in the area below the cheeks and chin.
As we age the face is more susceptible to ageing and can be harder to hide than other areas of the body. As the natural ageing process begins the contoured jawline and chin begin to sag and droop. The excess droopy skin that collects along the lower face, especially around the jawline, chin and below the cheeks is commonly referred to as the jowls.
What Causes Jowls
There are several effective treatments to get rid of sagging jowls. Jowls are caused by the natural ageing process and becomes more prominent from the mid to late 40’s. One of the most common question we hear from our clients is, why do we get jowls?
Face jowls develop as the skin loses elasticity and collagen (proteins in facial tissue). As these proteins deteriorate, the face loses firmness and tightness, causing the skin to sag. Face jowls can be caused by a variety of factors, these include:
- Loss of elastin and collagen
- Genetics
- Environmental Factors
- Lifestyle Factors
- Smoking
- Facial expressions
- Weight loss
- Sun exposure
- Using computers or phones
Skin ageing is a big factor with jowls and learning how to prevent and slow ageing is key to prevent and reducing the early onset of facial jowls. You can learn more about skin ageing and what you can do about it by clicking here.
Surgical & Non-Surgical Treatments For Jowls
Clients who develop early stages of jowl formation can benefit from non-surgical procedures like laser skin tightening, dermal fillers or MED: HIFU Ultra, while others with more severe jowls may require surgical intervention. Below is the 5 most effective treatments for jowls from non-surgical to surgical treatments.
If you are not sure what treatment would be best for you, you can book a face to face consultation on our website or contact us 24/7.
Dermal Fillers [Available At RT Aesthetics]
Dermal fillers, also known as fillers for short can be injected into the soft tissue within the skin to help restore lost volume or fill in fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers can provide dramatic results without the need for surgical intervention. The fillers do not cause any pain and can be done within an hour without the need for any long downtime after the procedure.
The procedure involves counteracting the formation of jowls by injecting the area with fillers, this is targeted to lift both the cheeks and the skin around the jawline and mouth. One of the best fillers for treating jowls is Sculptra, since it instantly plumps the area where it is injected while simultaneously stimulating new collagen production to provide a longer-term youthful appearing result.
Its important to note that this treatment may help reduce and rid jowls the results following the procedure are not permanent. Many patients will enjoy a noticeable improvement for 1 - 2 years or longer, however some clients may need more frequent top up appointments to get the desired effect.
Radio Frequency & Micro-Current [Available At RT Aesthetics]
Radio Frequency, also known as Thermage is a non-invasive, non-surgical laser tightening treatment that has the ability to tighten and re-contour the face, jawline and neck area. The treatment uses radio-frequency energy that heat deep layers of the skin which firms up existing saggy collagen and elastin fibers while promoting the production of new collagen.
Micro-current stimulates the muscles under the skin below the SMAS layer of the skin, resulting in the muscles contracting, thus tightening the skin. Combining Micro-current with Radio Frequency creates a thinner more contoured appearance to the face as the cavitation smoothes out and refines fatty deposits on the face, neck & jaw line.
Radio Frequency or Thermage is a great solution for younger patients who are in the early stages of jowl formation. Its a great treatment for those that are happy to have a monthly treatments to enhance the results and maintain the results following the procedure.
HIFU Treatment [Available At RT Aesthetics]
MED: HIFU Ultra treatment, also known as Ultherapy is a non-surgical laser procedure with the ability to tighten and firm the skin through the stimulation of collagen production. HIFU stands for high intensity focused ultrasound, that used focused ultrasound the tighten and firm the skin by stimulating the production of new collagen. HIFU face lifting can be used for saging jawlines, jowls, nasal folds, sagging eyelids, loose neck folds, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone or texture and large pores.
Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment cleared by the FDA for lifting the skin on the neck, chin, and brow, and improving lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to lift and tighten loose skin over time, without any downtime, needles or chemicals.
Many patients who have undergone the HIFU procedure receive good clinical results with a single treatment, though some people who have a fair amount of laxity may benefit from more than one treatment. In one study, 75% of Ultherapy patients realised a significant improvement in the neck and jawline that continued to last months after their treatment.
The HIFU procedure is non-surgical, non-invasive and has no nasty chemicals been injected into the face or body. The HIFU face lift procedure is great for lifting and tightening the jowls, saging chin and contouring the jawline. Results do take 3 - 6 months to fully develop with many clients only needing to have the proceudre once every 18 months - 3 years. Learn more about our advance 4D HIFU treatment.
Fraxel (CO2 Laser)
CO2 laser resurfacing uses the power of carbon dioxide to evaporate the top layers of the skin. These dermis layers tend to show off accumulated damage from the years, usually in the form of sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, and scars.
Fraxel is an ablative CO2 laser system that can actually reduce the amount of skin surface through two methods. First the Fraxel laser ablates targeted tissue, vaporising tiny columns of the skin. Secondly, the heat transferred during vaporisation works to shrink the remaining skin while stimulating the production of new collagen.
With this treatment you should expect to go through 3 - 5 treatments (spaced 4 - 8 weeks apart). You should expect to experience redness, slight swelling, and skin sensitivity for the first week after each treatment. Most clients see final results within 3 - 6 months after their final Fraxel laser treatment.
While this procedure is more invasive than Dermal fillers, HIFU Treatment, and Radio Frequency, the Fraxel CO2 laser systems offer quick and more dramatic results. The laser has the ability to reduce the volume of jowls and sagging skin within a single treatment. Many clients find this treatment to be more invasive than the other jowls treatments and may look to try something less invasive and effective like HIFU treatment.
Surgical Neck Lift Treatment
Neck lift surgery, also known as platysmaplasty, is the most effective treatment for jowls. However, this treatment is also the most invasive and requires anaesthetics, needles, long downtime and risks of scaring and other surgical risks. Although it may be the only option available to patients with severe jowls or substantial laxity.
During the neck lift procedure, 1-inch incisions are made under the chin or behind the ears. This allows the surgeon to surgically remove excess skin, tighten loose muscles and rid any excess fat that may be there. You will then be sticked up and usually return home the same day of the procedure. This procedure is very effective for jowls, however the risks, downtime and cost may not suit every client.
The surgical neck lift treatment provides the most dramatic and long-lasting result. Many clients may consider this treatment for jowls after trying other non-surgical, non-invasive treatments that are listed above. This treatment is the most expensive and require a longer recovery time, that clients must consider before opting for this treatment.
