EMS Body Sculpting: What It Does and What It Does Not
Contents
EMS body sculpting uses focused electromagnetic energy to force a muscle into contractions far stronger than you can produce voluntarily, which builds muscle and, on the newer devices, reduces fat at the same time. Published studies on the technology report roughly 25 per cent more muscle and around 30 per cent less fat in the treated area after a course. It is not a weight loss treatment and it is not a substitute for training. Here is what it actually does.
The short version
- EMS body sculpting uses focused electromagnetic energy to make a muscle contract far harder than you can on your own, which builds muscle, and on EMSculpt Neo reduces fat at the same time.
- Published studies report roughly 25% more muscle and around 30% less fat in the treated area after a course.
- Four sessions a few days apart, with the result developing over the following two to three months.
- From £2,000 for a course at our Newcastle clinic, with a free assessment first.
What EMS body sculpting is
The technology is HIFEM, high intensity focused electromagnetic energy. The applicator sits on the abdomen, glutes, arms or thighs and triggers supramaximal contractions: the muscle contracts completely, thousands of times in a session, in a way you cannot replicate in the gym because your nervous system will not let you.
The muscle responds the way it responds to any overload, by building new myofibrils and thickening existing ones. A 30 minute session produces around 20,000 contractions.
You will see it written as EMSculpt, EMS Sculpt, EM Sculpt and EMS body sculpting. They all refer to the same category of device.
EMSculpt and EMSculpt Neo are not the same thing
This is the distinction most articles skip. The original EMSculpt does one job, muscle. EMSculpt Neo adds synchronised radiofrequency, which heats the fat layer at the same time as the contractions are happening, so it does two jobs in one session.
We run EMSculpt Neo at our Newcastle clinic. If you are comparing clinics, it is worth asking which of the two they have, because the price is often similar and the outcome is not.
What results to expect, and when
| When | What is happening |
|---|---|
| Day of first session | The area feels like you have trained hard. Mild muscle soreness for a day or two is normal. |
| After 2 to 3 sessions | Most people notice the area feels firmer and more engaged before it looks different. |
| 2 to 4 weeks after the course | Visible change starts to show. Waist measurement is usually a better guide than the mirror. |
| 3 months | Peak result. This is when comparison photographs and measurements are taken. |
| 6 months onward | Muscle behaves like any other muscle. It holds if you stay active and fades if you do nothing. |
How many sessions do you need?
A standard course is four to six sessions over two to three weeks, usually two sessions a week with at least two days between them. One session on its own will not produce a visible change, and any clinic selling you a single session as a result rather than a trial is not being straight with you.
Most people come back for a maintenance session every three to six months, roughly the point at which the gain starts to soften.
Which areas can be treated
- Abdomen. The most requested area, and the one with the most published evidence behind it. Works on the rectus abdominis and, importantly, on the deeper core.
- Glutes. Lifts through muscle rather than volume, so it does a different job from filler-based approaches.
- Arms. Biceps and triceps, often after weight loss.
- Thighs and calves. Less commonly requested but treatable.
It cannot treat the pelvic floor. That is a different device entirely and we do not offer it.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It works best on people who are already reasonably close to where they want to be, and who train or are active. The further you are from that, the less a course of EMS will change, because you are adding muscle under a fat layer that has not moved.
It is not suitable if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, neurostimulator, drug pump, metal implant or IUD in or near the treatment area. Tell us about any of those at assessment. We also ask you to wait if you are pregnant.
If your goal is weight loss, this is the wrong treatment. If your goal is reducing a pocket of fat with no interest in muscle, fat freezing or Emerald Laser may fit better. We will say which at the assessment rather than push whichever machine is free that week.
Does it hurt, and what are the side effects?
It is strange rather than painful. The contractions feel intense and involuntary, and the intensity is turned up gradually through the session so you stay within what you can tolerate. On the Neo device you also feel steady warmth from the radiofrequency.
Afterwards, expect the soreness of a hard training session for a day or two. There is no downtime, no marks and no restriction on exercise, though most people are glad of a rest day.
Common questions
Does EMSculpt actually work?
For building muscle in a treated area, yes, and the evidence for the abdomen is reasonably good. For changing your body weight, no. Keep those two claims separate and the treatment makes sense.
Is it better than going to the gym?
No, and it is not meant to replace it. It reaches muscle recruitment levels training cannot, in one specific area, for half an hour. Training does far more for your health overall. The two work together.
Will the results last?
Muscle needs using. Stay active and the gain holds for months. Stop entirely and it fades like any other training effect. Fat cells reduced by the Neo device do not return, but the remaining ones can enlarge.
How much does it cost?
EMSculpt Neo at our Newcastle clinic is £2,000 for a course of four sessions on one area, quoted as the full course rather than a per-session figure that grows once you have started. The EMSculpt Neo page has the detail and the packages and prices page lists every course.
