What is HIFU Treatment and Which Areas Can Be Targeted?

Estimated reading time 4 minutes

You may have heard about HIFU, a non-surgical anti-aging treatment that delivers fast, long-lasting results. At RT Aesthetics, we offer MED: HIFU Ultra+, which is a variation of the standard HIFU treatment, using updated technology for a more precise and powerful treatment. In this guide, we explore what HIFU is, how it works, and which areas it can target.

What is HIFU treatment?.

HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive treatment that lifts and tightens the skin. This tightening helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles as well as reducing enlarged pores and improving skin tone. HIFU tightens sagging skin, so can help to combat signs of aging as well as contouring the face and body.

At RT Aesthetics, we offer MED HIFU Ultra+ treatments. This is state-of-the-art technology, using High Intensity Focus Ultrasound with Micro-Macro Focused Ultrasound. This treatment can only be offered by medical clinics like ours. The standard HIFU can be accessed at non-medical beauty salons and is 70% less powerful than the MED HIFU Ultra+.

How does HIFU work?.

During HIFU treatment, your aesthetic practitioner will clean the chosen area of your face or body and apply a gel. Using a handheld device, ultrasound waves will be emitted to the area in short bursts.

HIFU works by irradiating 65-75Cº of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy into the skin. The HIFU bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the ultrasound energy into the right depths, namely the SMAS layer – this is the same area that’s tightened during conventional surgery.

The HIFU causes microdamage in the layers of skin tissue, with no damage to the surface. This microdamage triggers the skin to undergo a wound healing process that stimulates collagen production and regeneration.

It’s this collagen production that helps to lift and tighten the skin. The heat from HIFU treatment can also help to destroy small pockets of fat cells, which can further contribute to lifting and tightening. However, to sculpt larger areas, we advise cryolipolysis treatment.

Which areas can be targeted by HIFU?.

At RT Aesthetics, we offer two variations of the HIFU treatment: MED: HIFU Ultra+ Face and MED: HIFU Ultra+ Body.

MED: HIFU Ultra+ Face targets areas around the face. This includes the full face, including the mouth and eyes – as the skin is more delicate around the mouth and eye area, we use a treatment that doesn’t target as deep as the other areas. We also offer treatments that only target the double chin, or the neck to jawline. We also offer a treatment that targets the brow and eyes, to lift sagging areas as well as reduce the appearance of crows feet. The HIFU face can also target the décolletage, to lift and tighten the skin in that area.

MED: HIFU Ultra Body targets various areas around the body to tighten loose sagging skin and rid small pockets of fat. This includes, but is not limited to, the abdomen and stomach, hips, buttocks, outer and inner thighs, and inner arms. It can be used to target common concerns such as cellulite, bingo wings, and post-partum tummy.

Is HIFU treatment effective?.

The MED: HIFU Ultra+ treatment we offer at our Newcastle clinic shows results that are 92% more effective and with an increased customer satisfaction rate of 97%. The new MF2 cartridge we use allows our aestheticians to treat difficult-to-reach areas, such as around the eyes, which cannot be treated effectively with generic HIFU Ultra.

Results can be seen immediately after the HIFU treatment, and will improve over time, with better contouring and skin tone showing after 8 weeks. And continuing for up to 6 months post-treatment. Results from just one treatment can last between 12-36 months, depending on the individual’s age, skin laxity, and lifestyle. For longer lasting and prolonged results, top-up treatments can be administered every 12-18 months.
