Can Freezing Your Fat Cells Kill Them

Freezing your fat away with fat freezing. A new treatment that rids unwanted fat cells.

One of many popular question many patients google before going ahead with a Fat Freezing procedure is “can freezing your fat cells kill them”? Fat Freeing, also known as Cryolipolysis was first introduced in 2012 and has since become a very popular across America, Europe and the UK.

Cryolipolysis is a procedure that exposes fat cells to cold temperatures, usually to below - 10 degrees. Freezing the fat cells to below o degrees causes a process called Apoptosis. Apoptosis is the process of which a cell dies (programmed cell death). This means that the freezing temperatures will cause some of the fat cells to die off during this process, resulting in a slimmer more contoured area where the treatment is carried out.

So, YES, freezing your fat cells will kill them.

Fat Freezing Treatment

Fat Freezing have shown that by exposing fat cells to cold temperatures (below -9 degrees), approximately 20% – 40% of the fat cells could be permanently destroyed. This can lead to long-lasting results when maintaining your weight after the procedure.

During the Cryolipolysis procedure the fat cells shrink, crystallise and disintegrate. This triggers an inflammatory response in your body in the coming days and weeks after the fat freezing procedure. The inflammatory response by the body causes scavenger cells, called macrophages, to enter the area to metabolise and clear the dead and dying adipose cells (fat cells).

Pee Away Your Fat Cells

As the fat cells are killed during the fat freezing treatment, the dead fat cells are transported through the lymphatic system and are eliminated from your body in the normal waste process. In short this means that after the procedure you will need to drink lots of water as the dead fat cells come out in your urine.

Fat Freezing is a painless procedure, so whilst Apoptosis sounds pretty intense for your fat cells, you won’t actually feel anything happening in your body. This all happens behind the scenes as you go about your daily routine. It is really that simple!

YES, you will be peeing away the fat cells.

After Fat Freezing

After the fat freezing procedure you will be given all your aftercare advice, review appointment and contact information for the clinic. It takes around 8 – 12 weeks for your body to complete this process and for results to become visible. At RT Aesthetics we would normally recommend 1 - 3 treatments per body area to achieve the best results.

Fat cells are susceptible to extremes of temperatures, this means that when you expose them to cold temperatures from +4°c and -10°c or when you heat them between 43°c – 45°c this will cause Apoptosis. To achieve visible and long-lasting results we would recommend choosing non-surgical fat reduction treatments that achieve Apoptosis.
