Urinary Incontinence
“Stress” urinary incontinence occurs during exertion and exercise. It may happen when we laugh, jump, run, or sneeze. It is common after vaginal childbirth and often accompanies the changes of menopause. Stress urinary incontinence is due to poorly functioning, weak pelvic floor muscles. The function of these muscles is to hold the bladder in place and control the release of urine. Weakness or injury of the pelvic floor muscles is often caused by vaginal childbirth, obesity or any situation that repeatedly increases intra-abdominal pressure, such as chronic constipation, heavy lifting, and high-impact exercise.
“Urge” incontinence is characterized by a sudden compelling desire to pass urine that is difficult to ignore. The cause of this type of incontinence is often unknown but can be related to medical problems like diabetes.
“Mixed” urinary incontinence is a combination of stress and urges incontinence.
Urinary incontinence increases with:
- Age
- Obesity
- Chronic constipation
- Vaginal childbirth
- Menopause
- Persistent coughing
- Some women experience a gradual increase in stress urinary incontinence over time, while others lose bladder control quite immediately after childbirth.
Treatments for urinary incontinence
In the past, treating urinary incontinence often involved invasive surgery, and the available nonsurgical options were challenging and embarrassing. However, today's standard of care for nonsurgical treatment of urinary incontinence involves directly supervised physical therapy with a specialised urinary incontinence specialist who guides patients through vaginal exercises to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles. While this treatment has undoubtedly improved the lives of countless individuals, its intimate nature has led many to shy away from seeking help.
Fortunately, there is now an excellent alternative available: EMSELLA available in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This innovative device effectively addresses urinary incontinence while allowing you to sit comfortably in a chair, fully clothed throughout the entire process.
What is EMSELLA and How Does it Work?
The EMSELLA chair is a non-invasive, non-surgical, non-embarrassing treatment for ALL types of urinary incontinence.
EMSELLA is an FDA approved device for the treatment of urinary incontinence in both men and women. EMSELLA uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM), similar to an MRI magnet, to activate motor neurons and contract the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles contract thousands of times during each treatment. The treatment is delivered comfortably while you sit in a specially designed chair. From beginning to end, you’ll remain fully clothed. The targeted contractions increase pelvic floor muscle mass and strength, restoring proper pelvic organ support. This treatment strengthens the pelvic floor muscles dramatically, tightens the walls of the vagina, and decreases urinary incontinence in 75% of patients. 33% of patients are completely cured of their urinary incontinence by this treatment. Additionally, patients notice an increase in sexual satisfaction as a result of stronger pelvic floor muscles.
Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles is the aim and result of properly and consistently performing daily Kegel exercises. Each EMSELLA treatment lasts 30 minutes, during which time the device stimulates over 10,000 contractions of the pelvic floor muscles. It is not humanly possible to maximally contract the pelvic floor muscles as frequently as is done while sitting in the EMSELLA chair. Thus, this chair is often referred to as the “Kegel Throne.
More About Emsella Treatment
EMSELLA eliminates the need for invasive surgeries and the potential discomfort associated with traditional treatments for urinary incontinence. This breakthrough device offers a convenient and discreet solution that is both effective and comfortable.
By utilizing high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM), EMSELLA stimulates the pelvic floor muscles, causing them to contract thousands of times during each treatment session. These powerful contractions result in significant strengthening of the pelvic floor, restoring proper support for the bladder and reducing urinary incontinence.
One of the remarkable aspects of EMSELLA is its ease of use. You can simply sit in the specially designed chair, fully clothed, while the device works its magic. There is no need to undress or feel self-conscious during the treatment. EMSELLA allows you to maintain your dignity and privacy while addressing your urinary incontinence concerns.
The treatment sessions typically last around 30 minutes, during which you may experience a tingling sensation as your pelvic muscles contract. However, there is no pain or discomfort associated with the procedure. Many patients find the sessions quite tolerable and often use the time to read, listen to music, or simply relax.
After the initial series of six EMSELLA treatments, patients can expect to see significant improvements in their urinary incontinence symptoms. In fact, studies have shown that 75% of patients experience a reduction in urinary incontinence, and 33% achieve complete cure. Not only does EMSELLA provide relief from incontinence, but it can also enhance sexual satisfaction by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles.
One of the most appealing aspects of EMSELLA is its non-invasive nature and lack of downtime. There is no need for recovery or downtime after each session, allowing you to resume your normal daily activities immediately. EMSELLA fits seamlessly into your busy lifestyle, providing a convenient solution for urinary incontinence without disrupting your routine.
If you have been hesitant to seek treatment for urinary incontinence due to the invasive nature of traditional options or the embarrassment associated with certain therapies, EMSELLA offers a remarkable alternative. With its non-surgical approach, comfort, and discretion, EMSELLA empowers you to take control of your urinary incontinence and regain confidence in your daily life. Don't let urinary incontinence hold you back any longer – discover the benefits of EMSELLA and experience the freedom it brings.
Am I an EMSELLA Candidate?
The EMSELLA procedure is FDA approved for men and women of any age who experience stress, urge, or mixed urinary incontinence. Since an MRI type magnet is used for the treatment, patients with metal devices, including copper intrauterine birth control devices (IUDs), artificial hip joints, and pacemakers will not be able to receive EMSELLA treatments.
What occurs during the initial consultation?
Prior to receiving EMSELLA treatments, you will have a consultation with one of the RT Aesthetic professionals to help you determine whether or not you are a candidate for EMSELLA. During this visit, we will explain the procedure in detail and address your questions and concerns. We will also provide you with our treatment protocol which addresses lifestyle modifications, exercise, and nutrition recommendations. When combined with EMSELLA, this protocol maximizes your chances of successfully stopping your urinary incontinence.
To help you be successful, we created a continence program designed to reduce and/or eliminate the causes of incontinence. Our program consists of exercise methods, behavioral modification, and the cutting-edge EMSELLA technology to assist you in reaching your goal of reestablishing continence.
What to Expect During the Procedure?
Patients report feeling a tingling sensation when their pelvic muscles contract. There is no pain or discomfort and no need for sedation or anesthesia. Most patients find the procedure very tolerable and typically read, listen to music, or just take time to relax during the appointment.
How do I prepare on the day of the procedure?
On the day of the procedure, wear comfortably fitting clothes. Since an MRI type magnet is used for the treatment, don’t wear any metal jewelry or accessories. Wear clothing without metal buttons or zippers.
Once checked in, you’ll simply sit on the EMSELLA chair fully clothed. A typical treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. Because the powerful magnet can damage your cell phone, consider bringing something to read. It is okay to bring a speaker or use Bluetooth headphones if you’d like to listen to music during the procedure
What is Recovery like after EMSELLA?
One of the greatest benefits of EMSELLA treatment is that there is no downtime or time needed for recovery. You may resume normal, daily activities immediately after treatment.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
To achieve optimal results, patients receive a series of 6 treatments. Two treatments are scheduled each week, for three consecutive weeks. There must be 2-3 days between each treatment session. After the initial series of 6 treatments, patients may need enhancement treatments every 1 to 6 months depending on the severity of urinary incontinence and desired results.
What kind of Results can I Expect from EMSELLA?
You may notice improvements after your first EMSELLA session, but it takes a series of at least six sessions to achieve optimal results. EMSELLA will definitely build and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. But, just like any other muscle, the pelvic floor muscles need regular exercise to maintain their strength. The best way to maintain the improvements achieved by EMSELLA is to combine regular maintenance EMSELLA treatments with daily, at-home Kegel exercises and following our protocol for permanent change."
