Vaser Liposuction vs Fat Freezing: Which Is Right for You?
Vaser liposuction and fat freezing both remove stubborn fat, and that is where the similarity ends. One is surgery, done under anaesthetic with a recovery period. The other is a non-invasive treatment you can have in a lunch break. What Vaser liposuction is
Vaser is a type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. A surgeon makes small incisions, injects a fluid to numb the area and shrink the blood vessels, then uses an ultrasound probe to loosen the fat before sucking it out through a thin tube called a cannula. The ultrasound makes the fat easier to remove than in traditional liposuction, which can mean less bruising and a smoother finish, but it is still an operation. It is done in a hospital or surgical clinic, under local or general anaesthetic, and it is not something we offer.
Recovery usually means a few days off work, a compression garment for several weeks, and bruising and swelling that settle over the following weeks. The final shape shows at around three to six months. Risks include infection, numbness, uneven contours, fluid collections and, rarely, more serious surgical complications.
What fat freezing is
Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, uses a cooled applicator to chill fat cells to the point where they break down, without damaging the skin above them. Over the next couple of months the body clears those cells naturally. Each session reduces the fat layer in the treated area by roughly a fifth, and most areas need two to four sessions six to eight weeks apart. There are no incisions, no anaesthetic and no time off. The area can be red, numb or tender for a few days, and a rare side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the area firms up instead of reducing, is something we always explain before treatment. Which one should you choose?
Fat freezing is the better fit if you are at or close to your goal weight and have a defined pocket you can pinch, such as a lower stomach, love handles, inner thighs, bra fat or a double chin, and you want to avoid surgery and downtime. It is gradual, so it suits people who are happy to see the change build over a few months.
Liposuction is the better fit if there is a larger volume of fat to remove, if you want the change in one procedure, or if several areas need treating at once. If loose skin is part of the problem, neither will tighten it on its own, and skin tightening such as Exilis Ultra or, for heavier laxity, surgery may be needed as well.

Common questions
Is Vaser liposuction permanent?
The fat cells removed don't come back, but the remaining cells can still grow if you gain weight. The same is true of fat freezing.
How many fat freezing sessions equal liposuction?
There is no straight swap. Fat freezing reduces fat gradually and works best on smaller pockets, so it is a different tool rather than a slower version of the same thing.
Can I have fat freezing after liposuction?
Often yes, once you have fully healed, to refine a small area. We would want to see the area and know when your surgery was first.
