How to Get Rid of Jowls Without Surgery

Estimated reading time 5 minutes

Jowls are often an inevitable part of aging. However, jowls can really knock our confidence and leave us feeling not like our true selves. Thankfully, there are a few options for treating jowls for those of us who don’t want to go under the knife. Below, we explore what causes jowls and what our options are for getting rid of jowls without surgery.

Why do we get jowls?

Jowls refers to the sagging skin below the jawline and chin. Almost everyone can develop jowls as they age – they occur when the skin loses elasticity and becomes thinner over time.

Collagen is naturally produced in the body, but we produce less as we get older. When skin is lacking in collagen, it becomes saggy and gets dragged down by gravity, resulting in jowls. Smoking and UV light can also both lead to lead to less collagen and elastin in the skin, resulting in a loss of elasticity.

Jowls can become more pronounced when there is less fat in the area too. When we age, we may find that we have less fat in the face and cheeks, which can lead to slightly more sagging in that area. If we experience fluctuations in weight, for example, losing weight quickly, this can also cause skin to sag and jowls to form.

Non-surgical treatments for jowls

There are a number of non-surgical treatments for jowls, as well as lifestyle changes that can help to prevent jowls from forming.

MED: HIFU Ultra+ Face

RT Aesthetics offers HIFU in Newcastle and can only be provided by approved medical clinics like ours. HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound and is a lifting treatment that targets not just jowls, but also the face, brow, and neck. It results in lifted, tightened, and rejuvenated skin.

Our MED: HIFU Ultra+ Face combines HIFU with Micro-Macro Focused Ultrasound to penetrate the upper layers of skin to deliver treatment to deeper than all other non-invasive treatments. It helps to stimulate collagen production within the skin and breaking down fat cells. The treatment lifts and tightens the targeted areas, reducing the appearance of wrinkles while also improving skin tone.

Our treatment targets the same layer of skin that would be tightened during conventional surgery, but the benefit of MED: HIFU Ultra+ Face is that there is no recovery time required. You’ll just get visible, long-term results from just one treatment, lasting between 18 months and three years.

BTL Exilis Ultra Face

At RT Aesthetics, we also offer BTL Exilis Ultra Face, an award-winning, non-invasive treatment to target jowls, reduce wrinkles, and overall tighten skin.

BTL Exilis Ultra Face combines ultrasound and radio-frequency to gently heat facial tissue. This stimulates collagen production in the face, which helps to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

When having the treatment, you’ll experience a warming sensation, followed by a cooling sensation, which helps to prevent the skin from overheating. It’s been described as a “pain-free hot stone massage” and requires no downtime after the treatment. Results can be seen instantly and improve over the course of treatment. We advise an initial treatment of four sessions, followed with top-ups every six to 12 months to maintain results.

SPF Protection

Regular SPF protection is a must for everyone’s skincare routine. It will help to keep you safe from UV damage, which could accelerate signs of aging, such as wrinkles and pigmentation. SPF should be applied all year round, even in the winter months, as UV rays will still be present.

UV damage can affect our collagen and elastin production, which causes skin to sag – which can, in time, lead to jowl formation. Regular SPF use can, therefore, help to prevent jowls. If you have one of our non-invasive treatments, it’s important to wear SPF every day in order to maintain your beautiful results.

Maintaining Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding extreme fluctuations can help to prevent jowls from forming. As we mentioned, jowls can form when a lot of weight is lost from the face, which leaves the skin to sag. So, keeping to a healthy, consistent weight can help to avoid jowls.
