Radio Frequency Treatment

Radio Frequency Treatment

Facts About Radio Frequency Treatments

Radio Frequency is a non surgical, non invasive procedure that is used to target sagging skin and aids the production of new collagen within the skin. Radio Frequency treatments tighten and aid in firming the skin and reducing the signs of ageing. Radio Frequency non surgical face lift is great for those not wanting to go under the knife or inject their skin with chemicals. The procedure is pain free as the client feels slight warming on the area of the skin been treated. Many clients explain how relaxing the procedure is.

Like laser and LED photon light treatments, Radio Frequency uses heat energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production, but the heat energy is electrical rather than light based. Below is a helpful guide on Radio Frequency, what is good and what is not so good about the procedure. It is important to note that every client is different and it is important to always book a face to face consultation with an aesthetic practitioner to learn more.

How Does Radio Frequency Treatments Work

Specialist dermatologist and founder and medical director of Eudelo Dr Stefanie Williams explains that Radio Frequency is appealing because it’s a non-invasive, non-surgical with no downtime and relatively gentle way to tighten skin: “Radio Frequency (RF) is a treatment that has become increasingly popular in recent years and uses RF energy to heat the dermis and tighten the skin without damaging the top layer.”

Radio Frequency uses radio frequency energy waves to tighten the underlying skin structure and contour the face to create firm, toned and youthful looking skin. It’s this tightening, firming action, caused by boosting collagen and elastin synthesis, that makes Radio Frequency especially suitable for targeting loose skin and the neck and chin, wrinkles and lines that develop between the nose and mouth.

Radio Frequency Treatment

Radio Frequency treatment takes anywhere between 20 – 45 minutes with very little downtime – you’re likely to experience a bit of redness for up to 24 hours afterwards but that’s about it! Many clients at RT Aesthetics have a treatment straight after work, on a weekend or during their lunch break. This makes Radio Frequency quick, safe and effective.

RADIOFREQUENCY

During Radio Frequency treatment the practitioner will apply ultrasound gel or oil onto the skin been treated. The practitioner will then start the machine and use a probe to heat skin to a bearable 38 – 40 degrees. Nearly all clients experience zero discomfort although some people are more sensitive to the deep heat sensation than others.

Radio Frequency On The Body

Radio Frequency treatment can be used on the body too. The treatment can help smooth out stretch marks and tighten areas of loose skin. Some clients may opt to have this treatment when undergoing dramatic weight loss to help reduce and limit the appearance of wrinkles and excess skin. The procedure is also very popular for the bum and giving the appearance of lifting and tightening without the need for surgery.

There are many different types of fat reduction procedures both surgically and non surgically. However, the Radio Frequency treatment is completely painless, has no downtime and provides an even, feathered result without surface irregularities which can be a problem with other technologies. The procedure encourages fat cells to commit ‘suicide’, also known as adipocyte apoptosis. The treatment is particularly suitable for upper and lower abs and inner and outer thighs, and is also offers great results on upper arms. Many clients also swear by its efficacy when it comes to reducing the appearance of cellulite too. It is recommend to combine the treatment with shockwave therapy.

Glowing Skin

Miss Sherina Balaratnam, surgeon, aesthetic doctor and founder of S-Thetics has seen an increase in both men and women seeking Radio Frequency treatments and puts it down to a desire to sculpt problem areas while avoiding pain and long periods of downtime, plus most of us can serve to benefit.

The beauty of Radio Frequency is that it is suitable for most people – the depth of heating helps to firm, tighten and lift as well as reinvigorating skin for a healthy glow. This ‘glow’ is down to the fact that Radio Frequency treatments help to rev up collagen production over time, but do keep that time element in mind.

Quick Treatment

Like most things in this life, it’s not a miraculous cure-all and it takes time to work. Victoria didn’t perceive any difference in terms of contouring or lifting after one treatment, and this tallies with Dr Williams ‘slow and steady’ treatment advice: “All energy based bio-stimulative treatments naturally require a course of several sessions (from six to 12) and will induce benefits gradually over some months.

Look at it like joining a skin gym – great results are rarely achieved in a single session.” Miss Balaratnam statess that having treatments every three to four days is ideal, but if you have weekly treatments you should start seeing results after a month or so.

Shockwave Thearpy for Cellulite Treatment

Cellulite Reduction Treatments

Shockwave cellulite therapy consists of high-energy acoustic waves applied to the skin in order to reduce cellulite. This treatment reduces the appearance of cellulite by stimulating cellular metabolism and exchange of blood lipids, inducing the production of new collagen and elastin fibers and stimulating blood and lymph circulation. This results in a more defined and reduction of cellulite appearance and smoother skin.

Shockwave therapy is a FDA approved device clinically proven to enhance and support the effects of all our body contouring treatments. It is a non-invasive, fast, painless treatment that can target and rejuvenate the skin and soft tissues. Shockwave Therapy has also been proven to accelerate and enhance the results achieved when combined with other fat reduction treatments such as Fat Freezing and Ultrasound Cavitation & Radio Frequency.

RT Aesthetics shockwave therapy is delivered by placing a probe up against the areas of cellulite, as it passes over the area it emits radial waves through the skin into the targeted area. The treated cells are then flushed away through the body’s natural removal process (lymphatic system) and continues for up to 3 months after treatment.

n short, more oxygen in the area allows the removal of toxins and cellulite build up. The treatment is painless and consists of weekly sessions (usually 6 – 8) that are 30 – 45 minutes long. There are no side effects associated with this procedure and has been clinically proven for its effects.

Top 12 Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work

If there was a magic pill or weight loss was easy we would all be slim, happy and beach body ready. However, thats not possible although everyone would love to think it is. Maintaining a healthy weight is challenging for many of us and we look to fab diets, weight loss supplements, books and even celebrities for a weight loss solution.

Weight loss does not have to be achieved by using the latest fad diet, weight loss supplements or buying books hoping for the secret answer – there isn’t one! Making healthier lifestyle choices, changing some bad habits and exercises a little more can make a big difference to our waist lines.

Top 12 Ways To Lose Weight:

Below is our top 12 weight loss tips that actually do work and can get you into shape this year. If you have any questions, concerns or want to learn more just reach out and contact us today.

1 – Slow & Steady Wins The Race

Many fab diets want you to restrict your daily food intake to below 500 calories with the promise of losing many pounds in a matter of weeks. However, fat reduction this way is not natural and only leads to the fat cell shrinking and will later swell back up when you start to eat a normal diet again. Another issue with fab diets is the fact that you are not changing your lifestyle and therefore not able to learn new and more healthier lifestyle choices.

2 – Eat Slowly

Many studies have been carried out into individuals eating their food slower and those that eat at a faster pace. Researchers have found that you consume an extra 67 calories every meal when you eat too fast vs eating slowly and drink regular throughout your meal. This is because you haven’t given your brain a chance to tell your body that you’re full. Remember that saying when your were a child, “don’t drink all your drink before your food or you’ll not eat it all up”. So, enjoy your meal at a slower pace and potentially lose 1Ib a month more, not to mention the extra pennies you’ll save by eating less.

3 – Water Helps

It is recommended you drink a large glass of water before eating your food. A study from the university of Birmingham found that obese adults that drank at least 500ml of water before their meals lost an average of 9.48Ibs over 12 weeks. Thats just under 10Ibs of weight loss for only needing to drink a glass of water before eating your meal – now thats easy!

So get your fancy water bottles out and get guzzling – the more you drink the more you shrink!

4 – Emotional?

Everyday is full of stress, whether that be family, friends, work or relationships, its all too easy to resort to emotional eating. As the long day at work becomes too tiring or your struggling to wake up on a Monday morning, reaching for the cakes, chocolate, sweets or crisps is going to play havoc on your waist line.

Next time you feel the stress go for a walk in the fresh air and clear your head. For many clients this works well and can be more effective than eating sugary foods. Practice 10 minutes of mindfulness to help ease your stress or anxiety while at work. You can find easy to use youtube videos and apps within the app store that teach and educate you in practicing effective mindfulness.

5 – The Sugar Cycle

Sugary foods give you an instant sugar rush which makes you feel great! Although these are short lived and cause you to crash within hours of digesting the food. This can make you feeling more tired and drained, resulting in you being hungry and craving more sugary food. Its a viscous circle that keeps going around and around until you break the habit.

When you need that sugar hit we recommend swapping sugary sweets for fresh fruit, a handful of mixed nuts or natural yogurt. There are great sugar alternatives these days with sugar free sweets or eating more fruit. Simply making a larger main meal with lots of vegetables can make you feel fuller for longer. Vegetables are full of fibre and can help you stop you craving sugar.

6 – Processed Foods

We all know that processed foods aren’t good for us, although many of us consume at least 1 processed food daily. They are quick, easy and convenient in the working world of today. The more processed foods you eat, the more weight you will gain. Anything that is not in its natural state means it has gone through all kinds of processes to get to your plate. These include, ham, bacon, sandwiches, chicken slices, cereal bars and more.

Most processed foods has lost a lot of its goodness and fibre. To lose weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle it is recommend to eat whole foods 90% of the time and keeping the processed and convenience foods to an absolute minimum.

7 – The Before Photo

Motivation is key throughout your weight loss journey and before and after photos are great to aid this. Keeping yourself motivated by sticking a photograph of yourself on the fridge can help change your mind to what you might take out the fridge to eat. It is also a great as this will become your ‘before photo’ as you loose weight and inches.

8 – Dear Diary

Keeping a food diary is a great way to track what your eat, when and how much. You can even see where you may be going wrong and what changes are key to you. Keeping an accurate record of your eating habits keeps you accountable and fully informed about what your eating and what nutrition your body is getting.

It doesn’t need to be on pen and paper you can download an app on your phone to keep track. With the invention of Apps like My Fitness Pal or FitBit you can count every single calorie that enters your body. You can track everything such as your steps, exercise, inches and weight loss, and even track your macros – if you want to get scientific that is. It can be really motivating to keep track of your daily food intake. However, it only works if you write every day down, including them bad days

9 – Exercise

Swimming, running, riding your bike or even just walking are all great ways to get you outside and exercising. The more your active the more you burn calories – its really that simple. With many smart phones you can track the amount of steps you’ve achieved daily. Aim for 10,000 steps each day, this is equivalent to walking 5 miles.

You could join a gym or exercise class to keep motivated, or find an exercise buddy to help keep you both motivated. Although you don’t need o sign up to a gym membership as just walking 10,000 steps each day (eve up and down the stairs) can help you lose them extra pounds.

10 – Cut The Alcohol

Did you know that cutting out just 1 glass of wine on week nights could lead to losing up to 14lbs a year. As life is hard many of us finish work looking to relive that stressful day and forget our worries. We are all tempted by a ‘cheeky’ glass of wine or bottle of beer at the end of a hard days work, however try and keep alcoholic drinks to a minimum to avoid using up unnecessary calories.

11 – Sleep Tight

Yes sleep is very important to weight loss and by not sleeping enough can course weight gain! Research conducted by scientists has shown that missing 1 nights sleep can slow down you metabolism by a shocking 20%. This is huge and many would not to think that they could lose weight by sleeping – weight loss can be easy. Your bed is now officially your best friend seven nights a week, 365 days a year!

12 – Traffic Lights

We are all aware about the traffic light system used on all our foods in the shops. Food packaging will be marked with a green, amber or red light for each nutritional category. These have been introduced to help us make healthier food choices. Green for go ahead its healthy, amber for eat in moderation and red for ‘this is bad’. Red light foods should be eaten rarely and avoided completely possible. Shopping for healthy options has never been easier.

Get Rid Of A Double Chin

How Can I Get Rid of A Double Chin

How can I get rid of my double chin? This is a frequently asked question from many of our clients. The answer isn’t always that easy and we need to look at lifestyle, genetics, medication and environmental factors. To understand how to get rid of a double chin, we first need to look at what causes a double chin and how this can influence the treatment the client may require.

Every client is different, therefore one treatment may be suited for one client and may not work for another. Throughout this article we are going to talk about, what causes a double chin, what you can do about a double chin, non-surgical treatments, home remedies, double chin exercises and how to prevent getting a double chin.

What Is A Double Chin

A double chin is an accumulation of submental fat separated by a natural skin crease. It is a common condition that results in the formation of a layer of fat below your chin. Some individuals may have a double chin that stretches out towards their ears and across to their chest.

Double chins are assumed to be associated with only weight gain and diet, however you don’t necessarily have to be overweight to develop it. Some clients may experience a double chin from genetics, medication and ageing. Below are some of the most common factors known to cause a double chin.

What Causes A Double Chin

There are a number of factors that contribute to a double chin and it is usually a combination of these factors that result in a visible double chin, not just excess fat like many individuals assume. These factors include the following:

  • Loose Skin
  • Weight Gain
  • Genetics
  • Excess Neck Fat
  • Small Chin
  • Weak Chin
  • Drooping Salivary Gland
  • Sagging Platysma Muscle
  • Age

A double chin can become more noticeable with time and may even be unsightly to look at. This can effect a persons self-image and self-esteem. These factors lead to a negative impact and affects your confidence, meaning you will want to get rid of a double chin as soon as you can.

double chin exercises and treatments

Exercises That Target A Double Chin

Many of us ask if chin exercises work and what chin exercises are the best todo at home to rid a double chin. If you wanted to tighten and tone your abs you would head to the gym or do an abs work out. Surly its the same for a double chin?

While there is no scientific evidence that chin exercises work to get rid of your double chin, there’s anecdotal evidence. Research has shown that exercises can help tighten and double chin and work well alongside a non-surgical double chin treatment.

Here are 6 exercises that may help strengthen, tone and tighten the chin muscles and skin in the area of your double chin. Unless otherwise indicated, repeat each exercise daily 10 to 15 times.

Ball Exercise

  • Place a 9 to 10 inch ball under your chin.
  • Press your chin down against the ball.
  • Repeat 25 times daily.

Tongue Press

  • Tilt your head back and look toward the ceiling.
  • Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth
  • Tilting your head back and forth
  • Repeat for 25 times daily

Straight Jaw Jut

  • Stop puckering and bring your head back to its normal position.

Neck Stretch

  • Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling.
  • Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
  • Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release.

Bottom Jaw Jut

Non Surgical Treatments For A Double Chin

A double chin can be incredibly difficult to shift, they’re not always caused by weight gain and can be attributed to uncontrollable variables such as age and genetics. Going under the knife is always an option but surgery can be daunting and often involves a long recovery period after the operation.

There are non-surgical ways to banish your double chin so that you can feel more empowered when you are faced with your reflection. Read below some of the great treatments that help reduce and rid a double chin. Book your face to face consultation at RT Aesthetics today.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

Double chins can sometimes be a cause of the ageing process. As we go through the natural ageing process collagen production slows down and the jowls and jawline starts to lose elasticity, resulting in the skin becoming looser and showing signs of sagging. Our non-surgical face lift treatment, HIFU skin tightening treatment, more commonly known as Ultherapy®, is effective for lifting and tightening lose and/or sagging skin. Known as the ‘lunchtime facelift’, a HIFU treatment takes minutes to administer and effectively reduces the appearance of your double chin.

Cryolipolysis (360 Fat Freezing)

One of our most popular non-surgical fat reduction treatment Cryolipolysis, or commonly known as Coolscultping®, 3D lipo, Cryo-Lipo and fat freeze. Fat freezing is a non-invasive, non-surgical, clinically proven method of targeting fat in problem areas using cooling technology. The procedure involves controlled cooling within the temperature range of -7 to -10 °C. This destroys the fat cells by a natural process called apoptosis. Cryolipolysis could be the perfect solution to treat that double chin by freezing and destroying the fat cells.

Double Chin Exercises

Double Chin Exercises To Tighten The Chin

A double chin, also known as submental fat, is a common condition that occurs when a layer of fat forms below your chin. A double chin is often associated with weight gain, but you don’t necessary have to be overweight to have one.

Genetics, weight loss, small or weak chin muscles, drooping salivary gland, sagging platysma muscle, and looser skin resulting from ageing may also cause a double chin. If you have a double chin and want to get rid of it, there are several things you can do.

  1. Place a 9 to 10 inch ball under your chin.
  2. Press your chin down against the ball.
  3. Repeat 25 times daily.
Straight Jaw Jut
  1. Tilt your head back and look toward the ceiling.
  2. Push your lower jaw forward to feel a stretch under the chin.
  3. Hold the jaw jut for a 10 count.
  4. Relax your jaw and return your head to a neutral position.
Tongue Press
  1. Tilt your head back and look toward the ceiling.
  2. Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth
  3. Tilting your head back and forth
  4. Repeat for 25 times daily
Pucker Up
  1. With your head tilted back, look at the ceiling.
  2. Pucker your lips as if you’re kissing the ceiling to stretch the area beneath your chin.
  3. Stop puckering and bring your head back to its normal position.
Neck stretch
  1. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling.
  2. Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
  3. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release.
Bottom Jaw Jut
  1. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling.
  2. Turn your head to the right.
  3. Slide your bottom jaw forward.
  4. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release.
  5. Repeat the process with your head turned to the left.

Rid Double Chin With Diet

If a double chin is a direct cause of weight gain, losing weight may make it smaller or get rid of it. The best way to lose weight is to eat a healthy diet exercise regularly. Some healthy eating guidelines include the following:

  • Eat four servings of vegetables daily.
  • Eat three servings of fruits daily.
  • Replace refined grains with whole grains.
  • Avoid processed foods.

Eat lean protein, such as poultry and fish. Eat healthy fats, such as olive oil, avocados, and nuts. Avoid fried foods. Eat low-fat dairy products. Reduce your sugar intake. Practice portion control.

Treatments For A Double Chin

Radio Frequency

When pricey face creams that promise to firm and slenderise don’t work, it might be time to consider Radio Frequency treatment; it’s a great long-term treatment for individuals looking to banish their double chin. Radio Frequency for double chins is on of the most popular non-invasive, non-surgical fat reduction treatment offered by RT Aesthetics. This modern technique melts away fat cells and can sculpt out a jawline that could cut glass. This treatment penetrates deep into the layers of fat so that your skin looks and feels tighter.

Jowls Treatment - 5 effective ways to rid jowls

5 Effective Treatments For Jowls

Jowls is the term used to describe sagging skin below the chin or jawline. Almost everyone develops jowls as they age, as the skin becomes thinner and less elastic over time. Jowls may be less pronounced in people who have thicker skin, more fat, or more collagen in the area below the cheeks and chin.

As we age the face is more susceptible to ageing and can be harder to hide than other areas of the body. As the natural ageing process begins the contoured jawline and chin begin to sag and droop. The excess droopy skin that collects along the lower face, especially around the jawline, chin and below the cheeks is commonly referred to as the jowls.

What Causes Jowls

There are several effective treatments to get rid of sagging jowlsJowls are caused by the natural ageing process and becomes more prominent from the mid to late 40’s. One of the most common question we hear from our clients is, why do we get jowls?

Face jowls develop as the skin loses elasticity and collagen (proteins in facial tissue). As these proteins deteriorate, the face loses firmness and tightness, causing the skin to sag. Face jowls can be caused by a variety of factors, these include:

  • Loss of elastin and collagen
  • Genetics
  • Environmental Factors
  • Lifestyle Factors
  • Smoking
  • Facial expressions
  • Weight loss
  • Sun exposure
  • Using computers or phones

Skin ageing is a big factor with jowls and learning how to prevent and slow ageing is key to prevent and reducing the early onset of facial jowls. You can learn more about skin ageing and what you can do about it by clicking here.

Surgical & Non-Surgical Treatments For Jowls

Clients who develop early stages of jowl formation can benefit from non-surgical procedures like laser skin tightening, dermal fillers or 4D HIFU, while others with more severe jowls may require surgical intervention. Below is the 5 most effective treatments for jowls from non-surgical to surgical treatments. If your not sure what treatment would be best for you, you can book a face to face consultation on our website or contact us 24/7.

Dermal Fillers [Available At RT Aesthetics]

Dermal fillers, also known as fillers for short can be injected into the soft tissue within the skin to help restore lost volume or fill in fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers can provide dramatic results without the need for surgical intervention. The fillers do not cause any pain and can be done within an hour without the need for any long downtime after the procedure.

The procedure involves counteracting the formation of jowls by injecting the area with fillers, this is targeted to lift both the cheeks and the skin around the jawline and mouth. One of the best fillers for treating jowls is Sculptra, since it instantly plumps the area where it is injected while simultaneously stimulating new collagen production to provide a longer-term youthful appearing result.

Its important to note that this treatment may help reduce and rid jowls the results following the procedure are not permanent. Many patients will enjoy a noticeable improvement for 1 – 2 years or longer, however some clients may need more frequent top up appointments to get the desired effect.

Radio Frequency & Micro-Current [Available At RT Aesthetics]

Radio Frequency, also known as Thermage is a non-invasive, non-surgical laser tightening treatment that has the ability to tighten and re-contour the face, jawline and neck area. The treatment uses radio-frequency energy that heat deep layers of the skin which firms up existing saggy collagen and elastin fibers while promoting the production of new collagen.

Micro-current stimulates the muscles under the skin below the SMAS layer of the skin, resulting in the muscles contracting, thus tightening the skin. Combining Micro-current with Radio Frequency creates a thinner more contoured appearance to the face as the cavitation smoothes out and refines fatty deposits on the face, neck & jaw line.

Radio Frequency or Thermage is a great solution for younger patients who are in the early stages of jowl formation. Its a great treatment for those that are happy to have a monthly treatments to enhance the results and maintain the results following the procedure.

HIFU Treatment [Available At RT Aesthetics]

HIFU treatment, also known as Ultherapy is a non-surgical laser procedure with the ability to tighten and firm the skin through the stimulation of collagen production. HIFU stands for high intensity focused ultrasound, that used focused ultrasound the tighten and firm the skin by stimulating the production of new collagen. HIFU face lifting can be used for saging jawlines, jowls, nasal folds, sagging eyelids, loose neck folds, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone or texture and large pores.

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment cleared by the FDA for lifting the skin on the neck, chin, and brow, and improving lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to lift and tighten loose skin over time, without any downtime, needles or chemicals.

Many patients who have undergone the HIFU procedure receive good clinical results with a single treatment, though some people who have a fair amount of laxity may benefit from more than one treatment. In one study, 75% of Ultherapy patients realised a significant improvement in the neck and jawline that continued to last months after their treatment.

HIFU treatment newcastle for jowls

The HIFU procedure is non-surgical, non-invasive and has no nasty chemicals been injected into the face or body. The HIFU face lift procedure is great for lifting and tightening the jowls, saging chin and contouring the jawline. Results do take 3 – 6 months to fully develop with many clients only needing to have the proceudre once every 18 months – 3 years. Click Here to learn more about our advance 4D HIFU treatment.

Fraxel (CO2 Laser)

CO2 laser resurfacing uses the power of carbon dioxide to evaporate the top layers of the skin. These dermis layers tend to show off accumulated damage from the years, usually in the form of sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, and scars.

Fraxel is an ablative CO2 laser system that can actually reduce the amount of skin surface through two methods. First the Fraxel laser ablates targeted tissue, vaporising tiny columns of the skin. Secondly, the heat transferred during vaporisation works to shrink the remaining skin while stimulating the production of new collagen.

With this treatment you should expect to go through 3 – 5 treatments (spaced 4 – 8 weeks apart). You should expect to experience redness, slight swelling, and skin sensitivity for the first week after each treatment. Most clients see final results within 3 – 6 months after their final Fraxel laser treatment.

While this procedure is more invasive than Dermal fillers, HIFU Treatment, and Radio Frequency, the Fraxel CO2 laser systems offer quick and more dramatic results. The laser has the ability to reduce the volume of jowls and sagging skin within a single treatment. Many clients find this treatment to be more invasive than the other jowls treatments and may look to try something less invasive and effective like HIFU treatment.

Surgical Neck Lift Treatment

Neck lift surgery, also known as platysmaplasty, is the most effective treatment for jowls. However, this treatment is also the most invasive and requires anaesthetics, needles, long downtime and risks of scaring and other surgical risks. Although it may be the only option available to patients with severe jowls or substantial laxity.

During the neck lift procedure, 1-inch incisions are made under the chin or behind the ears. This allows the surgeon to surgically remove excess skin, tighten loose muscles and rid any excess fat that may be there. You will then be sticked up and usually return home the same day of the procedure. This procedure is very effective for jowls, however the risks, downtime and cost may not suit every client.

The surgical neck lift treatment provides the most dramatic and long-lasting result. Many clients may consider this treatment for jowls after trying other non-surgical, non-invasive treatments that are listed above. This treatment is the most expensive and require a longer recovery time, that clients must consider before opting for this treatment.

Summary

The best treatment for jowls will depend on many different factors. These will include lifestyle, age, skin laxity, if you want a surgical or non-surgical treatment, and the amount of money you want to spend on your treatment. Its always best to book a face to face consultation with a specialist to understand more about what treatment may be best for you and what results your likely to achieve.

Why Do We Get Jowls

Jowls treatment

What Are Jowls

Jowls is a term used when skin begins to sag below your chin and/or jawline. Almost everyone will develop jowls as they age, some sooner than others depending on lifestyle and environmental factors.

One of the many signs of ageing is the development of facial jowls. Unfortunately we will all develop jowls at some part of our life as we get older, they become more prominent. So, what are jowls and how can you prevent or get rid of them?

As the lower cheek muscles lose strength and volume, the skin gravitates down which gives the jawline an undefined, loose appearance. As the facial jowls develop, so do the nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines. A lot of clients consider facial surgery or non-surgical solutions to rid jowls and bring back that sculpted jaw line. Non-surgical treatments such as, 4D HIFU and the Non-Surgical Face Lift can help sculpt, lift and tighten the neck and jawline.

Why Do We Get Jowls

Jowls develop as your skin becomes thinner and less elastic over time. Jowls may be less noticeable in individuals who have thicker skin, more fat, or more collagen in the area below the cheeks and chin. Some lucky individuals may never develop jowls, this is all down to their genes, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices. Facal jowls can be caused by a variety of factors, these factors include:

Age: They can develop due to a loss of elastin and collagen, proteins within the facial skin tissue that give the skin structure. As these proteins deteriorate, the face loses firmness and tightness, causing the skin to sag. This leads to the formation of jowls, fine lines and wrinkles.

Smoking: As a person smokes the blood vessels within the body become more narrow and the nicotine and other chemical within cigarettes can damage collagen and elastin. Smoking limits the blood circulation around the body and into the skin cells. This prevents the skin from getting enough nutrients like vitamin A and oxygen to keep it healthy.

Weight Loss or Weight Gain: As a person gains or loses weight it can lead to early facial jowls. When a person gains weight, the skin stretches to cover the increased body mass. However, if a client loses the weight, the stretched skin may begin to sag and develop into jowls.

Facial Expressions: Certain facial expressions can stretch out your face and neck skin. If you are exposed to the sun too much this can lead to the skin drying out, this can then cause the skin to sag. When you gain weight, your skin stretches, and if you lose that weight, the stretched skin may sag.

Tablets, Phones & Computers: If you constantly work on a computer or are on your phone all the time, the skin in your neck may become elastic over time depending on the angle in which you view the screens.

What Can You Do About Jowls

There are several options for treating sagging jowls or reducing how saggy or droopy they appear. Surgical procedures, such as neck lifts, can tighten your skin and make it look less saggy. Surgical intervention can come with risks, long downtime and potential scaring.

Non-surgical procedures for jowls such as, lasers, 4D HIFU, peels and Radio Frequency can change the composition of the collagen in your skin. Fillers can be used to camouflage hollow areas around the jowls.

Prevent Jowls

  • Avoid Smoking. The chemicals in cigarettes and other forms of tobacco can damage the skin. This can result in a reduction of collagen and cause saging jowls to aper at an earlier age.
  • Limit Exposure To The Sun: To achieve this you should always apply sunscreen to your face and neck before heading out for the day. Make it a part of your morning routine to minimise damage from UV rays. Many clients think that this damage will not happen within the UK but this is not true, always stay shaded and use a 30SPF or higher.
  • Limit Screen Time: Try to keep your head at a natural, comfortable angle when using a computer, tablet or phone to keep the neck skin from getting bunched up or stretched out. You can also protect your muscles by taking a 15 minute break for every hour of computer work that you do. Many clients follow chin exercises to help tighten the neck and chin area.

How To Reduce The Appearance Of Jowls

If you’re not interested in surgical or nonsurgical procedures but still want to reduce the appearance of your jowls, you may consider changing your personal style to help conceal them. Makeup and clothing may help.

Makeup Using different styles of contouring along your chin and neck can help make your jowl lines less noticeable. You can watch tutorials online or visit the makeup counter at Macy’s or Sephora to get a demonstration in person. The store’s beauty reps can also help you determine which shades are right for your skin tone.

Scarves and turtlenecks aren’t just for staying warm — they also provide coverage. Although turtleneck shirts or sweaters can hide your jowls completely, scarves can be tricky. Avoid sheer fabrics and opt for something more structured to provide reliable coverage.

Skin Ageing

antiageing treatments

What Is Skin Ageing?

Your skin changes as you age. You might notice wrinkles, age spots and dryness. Your skin also becomes thinner and loses fat, making it less plump and smooth.

Skin ageing is something everyone will experience, some sooner than others depending on lifestyle and environmental factors. Skin ageing is a degenerative process caused by intrinsic (chronological) and extrinsic (environmental) ageing.  These factors are something most of us can relate to, and contribute to the visible signs of skin ageing:

  • A loss of skin firmness & elasticity
  • Sagging jowls
  • Double chin or sagging neck
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage and pigmentation
  • Irregular pigmentation and texture
  • Large pores
  • Hooded eyes & crows feet
  • Dry skin
  • Loss of facial volume

Intrinsic Ageing

Unfortunately, intrinsic ageing is something we have little control over. This is because it is a natural process, determined by internal factors and is programmed by our genes. If your parents began to age at a younger age than its likely you will begin to age sooner too.

Genetics can cause some clients to be more likely to develop jowls, double chins or fine lines and wrinkles at a sooner age, such as their mid twenties. This can cause many clients to look at surgical or non-surgical procedures to turn back the years and bring back their more youthful skin.

Extrinsic Ageing

Extrinsic ageing, also known as photo-ageing, is caused by external factors that we are regularly exposed to and can be prevented or minimised.  External elements such as sunlight, pollution, nutritional intake, smoking, stress and lack of sleep are among the most common factors.

The single biggest culprit is the sun! The UV rays from sun-beds are another culprit and can cause a lot of damage to the skin in just 1 session. Many clients want to be tanned and bronzed kissed as they feel happier within their skin, however, the damaged caused from the UV rays can cause you to age a lot sooner.

What Causes Age Spots?

Skin ageing is something we will all suffer with as we grow old. It causes the surface layers of our skin (known as the epidermis) to thin, and the number of melanocytes (the pigment producing cells) to decrease.

If some areas of the skin are more exposed to the sun than other areas, the remaining melanocytes in these areas will increase in size. This leads to the skin appearing thinner and more pale, with large pigmented areas known as age spots, lentigos or liver spots.

hifu treatment double chin

What Causes Skin Dryness?

The production of oil within the skin slows down as we age. This results in the skin to becoming dry, and our blood vessels become more fragile. This can cause an increased chance of bruising as we age. Many clients look to rid this problem with creams, serums and facials to help hydrate the skin.

What Causes Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Collagen and elastin are protein fibres that give the skin its structure and firmness. As we age this decreases and the collagen does not renew as much as it does when we are younger. As the ageing process continues the collagen and elastin fibres begin to break down and lead to relaxing of the skin muscles and skin tissue.

The break down in the skin proteins leads to formation of fine lines and wrinkles. The loss of elasticity within the skin results in saging skin, jowls and lose saging neck.

It’s important to remember that the sun’s harmful rays are the culprit behind many of our skin ageing changes and although these effects can not be completely undone, with the correct skin care and advanced clinical treatments, they can be significantly repaired. Your skin remembers every hour of sun it’s been exposed to, and although the effects don’t show whilst we are young, it’s extremely important to protect your skin throughout your whole life.

10 Ways to help reduce premature skin ageing

  • Protect yourself from the sun:  The sun plays a major role in ageing the skin prematurely.  Use a minimum SPF30 Broad Spectrum sunscreen everyday and reapply every two hours when in the sun.  Wear a hat, protective clothing and sunglasses.  No sunbathing and avoid the sun between the hours of  10am and 4pm .  Use a high strength antioxidant serum containing L’ascorbic acid (vitamin C) daily.
  • Healthy well balanced diet: Eat a low Glycaemic Index diet rich in fruit and vegetables, lean meat and fish, nuts and seeds and plenty of water.  Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates as these are proven to accelerate the ageing process.
  • Drink Less alcohol
  • If you smoke, STOP!  Smoking rapidly increases the ageing process and leads to a dull, sallow complexion.
  • Sleep on your back or use a silk pillowcase.  Sleeping on your stomach or side causes lines to appear on the face and décolletage.  Over time these lines turn into permanent wrinkles.
  • Exercise regularly.  A study published recently suggests that moderate to vigorous exercise performed for a minimum of three hours per week can help reverse the signs of ageing.
  • Reduce repetitive facial expressions.  Using the same facial expression over many years leads to the development of permanent wrinkles.  For example wearing sunglasses can help prevent the lines caused by squinting.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Use an anti-ageing focused skin care regime using advanced cosmeceutical products and have regular clinical facial treatments.  The gold standard active ingredients recommended for an advanced anti-aging skin care programme are: retinol, or other vitamin A derivative, growth factors, an L ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) antioxidant and minimum SPF 3O sunscreen.
